I am delighted and honored that we recently received our first endorsement by an organization: the Freethought Equality Fund (FEF) Political Action Committee.
In a letter to me, FEF PAC Coordinator Ron Millar stated that "This endorsement is in recognition of your support for the issues that are important to the nontheist community - secular government, scientific integrity, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ rights, and civil rights for all Americans."
Over many years and in recent weeks, we have seen how legislators have used religion as a wedge to deny some citizens access to healthcare, refuse them public services, place them in danger, and disregard their legal marriages. There is immense diversity among and within religious traditions, so much so that using any system of belief to discriminate against others creates immediate strife and confusion. For this reason, I am in favor of *secular* government, in which each individual is free to believe whatever they choose concerning matters of faith, if anything at all. I say this as a member of the clergy who has dedicated his career to speaking out for justice and supporting people in need, regardless of whether they hold to a religious doctrine or not.
As the Representative for Mississippi's First Congressional District, I will vote in support of legislation that reflects the best of what our country can be, when it affirms each person's freedom of belief while protecting their unalienable human rights and dignity.
