I'm grateful for our first fundraiser, 'Cash for Carlton for Congress', held yesterday in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Lucia and Mark Savage hosted us in their beautiful home. They are friends and former congregants of the First Unitarian Church of Oakland (CA), where I served as one of the ministers from 1997 to 1999.
Twenty-six friends showed up over the course of the afternoon. I gave a presentation in which I shared some of my story, some details about Mississippi's First Congressional District, and my priorities once elected. We touched on important themes, ranging from gerrymandering, abolition of the Electoral College, quality education, economic growth and access to affordable healthcare. Lucia set a goal of raising ten times the cost of my airfare early in our time together. Between the generous contributions of the good folks present and those who donated before and after the fundraiser, we raised more than $3700! It was a great start to what will surely be many more occasions to gather in community as we dare to believe in ourselves, each other and the kind of country in which we want to live.
